XDCAM Files From PMW-500 SXS Card Not Exporting Into Avid
My client uses AVID and can’t export XDCAM files we shot on a PMW-500 by using the XDCAM Browser. The files were recorded on SXS Cards transferred to a GTECH Mini Drive in their original form from the cards. They’ve downloaded the latest XDCAM browser from the Sony micro site and can view the files but can’t export them into their AVID. Since I use FCP, I don’t have experience with Avid …. has anyone else had this issue and/or know if there’s a solution? Thanks!
We have five days of footage for a Discovery project they need to access, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are they attempting to export from XDCAM Browser to MXF or are they trying to import via Avid AMA? Do you know the Media Composer version? Also, are these .mp4 files or MXF files shot on SxS using an optical XDCAM codec (50 Mb 422 etc)? How is the export failing/not working?
Without knowing any of the above it’s difficult to guess the problem.
If they are not .mp4 files the export options in XDCAM Browser are limited, but non-mp4 file types do not require conversion and can be brought directly into Media Composer. If it’s MC 5 the AMA window can be used for all XDCAM file types.
Media Composer 5.0.3 requires an updated AMA plugin for full support, particularly if the files are MXF shot on SXS.

A great sharing that expands my knowledge on XDCAM Files workflow.
As far as what I’ve got know, XDCAM HD422 products record and play back high definition video with 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 resolutions using MPEG HD422 compression and the XDCAM HD422 video footage is wrapped in an MXF container, which is can not natively imported by many professional video editing application including the Avid Media Composer. So, it will be a bit hard when importing XDCAM HD422 video footage with Avid MC.
To import my PMW-500 footage into Avid MC, I’ve tired the AMA link, but the MXF files will not directly import into ver 4 or my ver 5. Finally I end up transcoding the MXF to Avid DNxHD format– it works natively in Media Composer.

I have to respectfully point out that much of the below is not accurate.
Avid, Premiere, Vegas, Edius and most other NLEs accept .mxf files natively, and all of them support direct import or linking of XDCAM .mxf files. Media Composer 4/5 are a bit old and the older AMA plugins can have some issues with the more recent .mxf files from the PMW100/200/500. If this is what you are running into you should call it into Support on either side and you will get some assistance. You may also be able to directly import the files into Media Composer. Note also that AMA plugins are paired exclusively with their specified Avid versions. Avid’s site and https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads have breakdowns of which plugins are used with which versions.
