XDCAM EX1 and FCP 6.0.2
We’ve been seriously looking at replacing our HDV Z1U cameras with the EX but I’m wondering about the compatibility of it and FCP 6.0.2.
Of course, we would want to use its HQ setting but I have heard from Sony that FCP can’t handle this yet. I know the 6.0.2 update gave me compatibility for the EX but has anyone use it with the HQ setting yet?
We are looking at using the 1080p30 mode in HQ. We already do this our XDCAM HD camera. But I know there is an issue because of the frame sizes. The EX shoots a true 1920×1080 image while the XD HD shoots 1440×1080. Has anybody tried mixing these yet?

While I don’t have the camera yet (it’s on order). I’ve tested other people’s clips. FCP 6.0.2 is compatible and with XDCAM Transfer plugin 2.1 I had no problem importing and using EX1 clips. FCP 6.0.2 includes the codec and easy setups for full 1920×1080 clips. Now I haven’t tried mixing it with 1440×1080 XDCAM clips. I’d imagine something would have to be rendered depending on the timeline settings. I’ll ask around since I know some of the people who had pre production versions and ordered it also have F350s.

“These are all questions that we have. To add to this, we (Schazam Productions) work in a specific market that time can mean getting the money shot. XDCAM EX doesn’t allow for this at the moment.
I still don’t understand why Sony didn’t come up with a solution like Panasonic’s P2 Store or the new P2 Portable Recorder.
Sony, if you’re listening…. You’re missing the boat again.

Has anyone downconverted the EX1 HD format to SD DV25 using FCP and if so did it meet “broadcast standards” for a SD TV broadcast?
