  • XDCAM Ex Footage Imported into FCP won’t play or Import into PP CS3

I was on a shoot today and we shot using a Sony EX1. We later went to a pub to few the footage where the director put it onto his laptop using FCP. He then copied the files onto a portable hard drive and we transferred then onto my mac as I was intending to do some colour work on it.

But the files don’t play, I get audio but no image.
I tried to import the files into Premiere CS3 (i don’t run FCP) and it says “codec missing or unavailable”. I have looked around and downloaded the update 3.2 for Premiere, which is meant be be a fix for XDCAM EX as far as I can see, but that has made no difference. Is the problem that the footage was imported into FCP?

If there is anyone who can help I would really appreciate it, otherwise just tell me want i want to do is impossible and put me out of my misery cos I have been pulling my hair out.

Provided the entire Folder structure has been copied over the clips should come into PPro.
FCP can’t import XDCAM footage as it is from the camera. It needs to be converted to a QT.mov file in FCP 6 via Convert and Transfer under Log and capture in the File Menu of FCP.
Make sure you have the entire folder structure. If there a foler or part missing the whole XDCAM footage can’t be used.
    Good Luck

If you can access the files from the card itself – the files in the BPAV folder, those should import into PPro CS3.2. Just import in the whole folder, skip past the error message, and they should show up in your bin.

I don’t think you’ll be able to use the files that FCP produced from the originals.

Thanks for the responses guys, they are much appreciated. Unfortunatly I dont think i will have access to the cards again as the director has gone back to London (and I live quite far away). I could maybe sort something out but it would be better for all if i could use the files I have

If I was to get my paws on a copy of FCP 6 would i be able to open the files in that? Is then codec required to play the clips with FCP 6? It seems odd to me that quicktime wont play them on my machine, is that the reason why?

    Thanks again.

you might try downloading the free Apple Prores codecs and then see if it will play in Premiere pro. You’ll probably have to upgrade your quicktime to 7.5 as well.

Thanks Dennis, I tried to install that codec but apparently I already have it. I am also already running QT 7.5.
