I am working on setting up a pipeline that involves:

    Shooting with EX3 1080i60 35mbit’s VBR
Using Transfer 2.7.1 to bring files into FCP 6.0.4 running on OS X 10.5.5
Naked show will be edited in FCP and then needs to be exported to a format that is accepted by AVID for graphical treatment in another shop.

I plan to export show to MXF and then drop the file on a disk using PMW-U1

Questions – has anyone had any problems using MFX files generated by FCP in AVID? Any Gotchas? Any format / codec issues I should be thinking about?

I understand I can not playout to the PMW-U1 until the new firmware is released. Correct me if I am wrong – I should be able to drag and drop an exported MFX file (previously made in FCP) onto the U1 and create a professional disk that will play in an XDCAM deck – is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Which version of Avid? If it’s not one of the latest versions it probably won’t be able to read the XDCam codecs.

FCP does not export MXF. It prefers to export Quicktime, it can export AVI, but MXF is not an option directly from FCP.

You need to pick up your telephone and speak to someone at the Avid house that’s doing the finishing work. They know exacly what they can work with and what they cannot.

    Thanks Arnie,

You are right – I need to get more information. I am in the process of getting the contact info that I need and am just doing a little leg work.

As I said, I am using Transfer 2.7.1 to bring files into FCP 6.0.4 running on OS X 10.5.5. I also have XDCAM Log and Transfer Plugin installed. With this configuration exporting MFX is an option. I am not sure of it is a tool that comes with Transfer or Log and Transfer – but it shows up under Export as a selection Export to SONY XDCAM – which creates an MXF file – unopenable by quicktime.

Does anybody have experience working with the PMW-U1 with SONY XDCAM MXF files created in FCP. I know that until the new driver is released (from what I have read – rumored to be this month) the drive can not be mounted to and played out to real time from FCP. How are people using the read / write drive with FCP when writing? I’m interested if MXF files made in FCP burned to professional disk with this drive, will play in other XDCAM decks?

    Thanks,
    Jason
