    Hi

I work for a Post company in Switzerland. We often get things to edit for the TV of Switzerland. Now the changed to XDCAMs.

Before they changed to XDCAM they had BETACAM and the workflow was like that: They logged the video at their Avid stations and brought us a ALE, we converted it to a log list for Finalcut and imported it as a Batch list. Then we did a Batch Capture and got all the files from the Betatape.

Now with the XDCAM they do the same thing the make a log list and bring it to us. But then begins the problem. We can import the files with the XDCAM Transfer Software, but then we don’t have just these files from the Batch List. And if we import all the files we can’t reconnect them, because they renamed it before they exported the ALE. And as I know Finalcut searchs about the names and not about the timecode. The first time we had to do this was this monday we rented a machine with which we could use the disks of the XDCAM like a tape and we did a Batch Capture as ever. But when we do it like that we capture it in realtime and one of the advantage of XDCAM is that it is faster than realtime, so it is a bit a pity that we can’t capture it with the XDCAM Tranfer Software and reconnect the footage at the imported Batch List.

Does anybody knows a solution for this problem or is there a workaround?
    Thanks in advanced.

    Sabrina,

You’re not the only one faced with this problem. I’ve had many conversations with people at Sony,
Apple and elsewhere to address this issue. I optimistically hope that by April (NAB) there will be
an improvement to this situation. We’ll see.

In the mean time, go ahead and contact anyone you can at Sony and Apple and let them know that
this is a SIGNIFIGANT ISSUE and you’d like to see it addressed.

I’m a HUGE fan of the XDCAM format. We shoot thousands of hours of it every year. But, this flaw in how it handles the “reconform” or “uprez” really is a weak point that needs addressing.

Thanks Mark for your answer. What a pity that there’s no solution. But then we hope for the NAB to get some improvement.

    Thanks
    Sabrina
