  • xbox to vegas to youtube what is the best render format?

    Hi
My son makes videos on xbox then brings them into the computer using u-lead capture card. Then renders them in VEgas (we have v.6 at home). He renders them to mpeg2 and they take sometimes 6 hours to upload to youtube. what is the best format to put them in for youtube? should he be saving it as something else? He says vegas 6 doesn’t do mpeg4.
What is the best program to use and the best format to put the upload in?
He saved all his money for a Pinnacle dv100 capture device and when it arrived all we could get was black and white picture and I ahven’t been able to figure out why.
now he’s gone back to capture card but the whole process takes a very long time.
what is the best process and program/s to use to get something from xbox to vegas (or other program?) to you tube.
    thank you so much,
    confused mum!

Hi Amanda, Your son is right. Vegas 6 is extremely old and doesn’t support the newer formats that sites like YouTube uses. Also, I would never buy any hardware (or software for that matter) from Pinnacle. All of their hard is proprietary and only works with their software which is very buggy. I’ve owned Pinnacle hardware and software and would never recommend them to a friend.

I would recommend that you get him the latest version of Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 and a Hauppauge HD PVR. The HD PVR will capture HD from the Xbox into the AVCHD format which you can then edit with Movie Studio HD 11 and upload to YouTube using the “Internet…” MPEG4 AVC/H.264 templates. It should all work rather seamlessly. I own this device and it’s also good for recording HD programming from cable TV like a DVR/VCR. 😉

    brilliant thank you.
what is the best type of computer to buy for this job? would it need any particular specs (i.e. particular video card and storage capacity to handle the vegas pro 11?
    thanks again

[Amanda Duff] “what is the best type of computer to buy for this job? would it need any particular specs (i.e. particular video card and storage capacity to handle the vegas pro 11?”

I would try and get a modern QuadCore computer. DualCore is very old technology (which is why it’s so cheap) but when working with video, it pays to have a QuadCore even if it’s an inexpensive one. Laptops are usually less powerful than desktops so a desktop computer would be preferable. I would stick with a PC build around an Intel Core i7. If money is tight a Core i5 will do. HP Z Series (Z200, Z400, Z600, Z800) class workstations are really nice for video editing and come at a range of price points.

As for a graphics card, an NVIDIA card that supports CUDA (most newer ones do) is what you want. There is more support for NVIDIA than ATI in video editing applications.

Other things to look for is lots of memory. 4GB should be the minimum. A second 1TB hard drive for storing video files will also make things easier.

I’m not sure if this is helpful or not but without knowing your price range that’s just some general direction.

    Hi again,
So finally I succumbed to pressure from son and was about to buy a Hauppage pvr 1313 when I realised it doesn’t ahve a hard drive correct? I thought it was like set top box but now realise it’s more like an external capture card so that means I would have to have my pc right next to the xbox – correct? That changes things because the pc is shared by all and physically can’t fit next to the xbox so now I’m confused as to my best option.

If I’m understanding correctly, my only option now would be to find a laptop strong enough to handle the job of x-box to VEgas and now we are back into big bucks.

The only think I can think of is that we have a HD DVD recorder Sony and I thought I could hook it up to record from the xbox but whenever I try I get an error message (something about it not being able to read the format?) and screen goes blank with a little strip at the bottom.

So question = is there a way I can go from xbox to VEgas without having a pc connected?

    Thanks

ALSO – where is best to post about editing software classes/websites/careers for my son? I’m in Australia and Ic an see it’s a passion of his so need to start looking into what subjects he should be doing in upper high school and where he could go after high school. thanks.

That’s correct. The HD PVR is a capture device that connects to a computer via a USB cable. I have mine connected to my laptop.

[Amanda Duff] “That changes things because the pc is shared by all and physically can’t fit next to the xbox so now I’m confused as to my best option.”

You could move the Xbox close to the computer just when he wants to record. Really the only options are to bring the Xbox to the computer or the computer to the Xbox.

Yea, but you can probably get away with a NetBook computer for $229USD and use that for capture. I have a Lenovo S10 that I could test with and see if it can capture without dropping frames. It should be able to.

[Amanda Duff] “So question = is there a way I can go from xbox to VEgas without having a pc connected?”

Not that I know of. There are no HD recorders on the market that I’m aware of and never will be if Hollywood has anything to say about it. That’s what makes the HD PVR so popular. No one is going to ever build an HD version of the VCR because content creators won’t allow it. People have responded by building HTPC’s (Home Theatre Personal Computers) and there is quite a good business supplying cases for such PC’s that fit with other home theatre equipment.

There are even off-the-shelf HTPC’s like:

Acer AspireRevo AR3700-U3002 Slim and Compact Desktop for $339USD.

Lenovo Ideacentre Q150 Series 40814AU Desktop for $309USD

Zotac MAG Intel Atom N330 for $270USD with no Operating System

It may be possible to run the HD PVR software on one of these. I would check with the manufacturer first.

The point is, having a PC next to your TV is becoming more common place and buying an HTPC is not that expensive (Although I’m sure you don’t need the extra expense.)

[Amanda Duff] “ALSO – where is best to post about editing software classes/websites/careers for my son? I’m in Australia and Ic an see it’s a passion of his so need to start looking into what subjects he should be doing in upper high school and where he could go after high school. thanks.”

That’s difficult to say from the USA. Here in New York State we have a school system within a school system called BOCES. It gives students technical training while they are in High School. Students attend their regular High School for 1/2 a day and BOCES for the other 1/2. My oldest son went there for Culinary training and he’s now attending the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in no small part to attending BOCES. My middle son is going their for Graphic Design and my daughter might go for Video Production next year. They have an awesome video production course all taught on the Adobe Creative Suite (not my first choice but not a bad choice either). Having a solid background in Math and Science is always helpful when trying to understand aspect ratios and lighting angles.

If there is nothing like that in Australia you could purchase training from VASST that will give him a lot of insight into how the Sony Vegas tools work. We have DVD training from beginner to advanced. I would recommend that he volunteer to be a cameraman for a local videographer and learn the ropes from someone in the business. You could set this up as a one year apprenticeship where he agrees to work for free for a year with the option to get hired on for pay after that if he does well. The bottom line is he now has a year of experience in the business to put on his resume’ even if he doesn’t get hired and he will learn valuable shooting skills in the process.

Ok we’ve bought it and we’re stuck.

Can view the xbox and play it (loop through the hd pvr) however cannot get any sound from the tv or the turtle beach headphones. the headphones have only one spot to plug into on the tv and there’s nothing. tried changining xbox settings from ‘both’ ‘headphones’ or ‘speaker’ but can’t get any sound. is it to do with the cables going through the hd pvr?
    thanks

The HD PVR has both video and audio outputs. Are both connected from the Xbox? Are both connected to the TV? (I’m assuming your connection is Xbox ==> HD PVR ==> TV)
