I accidentally hit “x” while a layer was selected. AE brought the layer to the top of the Timeline window.
What’s the logic here? I find it convenient. Are there others related to this one I could learn?

I haven’t seen an update to this pdf file from Chris and Trish Meyer, but the original still holds up (it was written for AE 5.5) as one of the best overall views of AE tips, tricks, and keyboard shortcuts ever written:
