No, my question’s not about how to animate a mask that reveals a cute squiggly thing…

I was viewing the Exopolis commercial reel here: https://www.exopolis.com/home/popup/mov.php?id=commercial&type=reel. In the Chevron commercial that shows up near the end, the text is written on, and with each letter of the word that is being typed, it’s as if the correct letter is being selected from a sequence of garbled characters and numbers. The effect is hard to see at full speed, but if you look at it frame by frame, it’s clear what is going on. My question is if this is a plug-in I don’t know about, or is there way of doing this by hand without manually animating an actual sequence of hundreds of letters and opacities.

    Hope this makes sense,

    Cheers.

This is what After Effects does well. There a multiple layers probably on a couple globals and I noticed numbers preceeded the dissolved on letters. Trish & Chris Meyers have several books out on AE and I think I’ve seen a similar effect in one of their tips & tricks tutorials in either DV or Video Systems (or some free trade mag). Google them and see what you find. Good luck.

Last month’s DV magazine has a nice article regarding this.

    Easily done in AE.

Create multiple layers of text for each word. Then animate the text offset parameter, animate the text opacity parameter.
