Wrapping QT DV to AVI DV?
Posted by Xavier De champs on November 15, 2009 at 7:00 pmI need to deliver a master in an AVI DV file. My footage is a ProRes LT file. How do I compress this footage to AVI DV? I can use Compressor to make an QT DV. But what is the best way to get this into an AVI file? Is there any program which lossless unwraps a QT DV file and wraps it back up in an AVI DV file?

November 15, 2009 at 9:41 pmI think MPEG Streamclip can do that. But, I’m not sure if it re-wraps or re-compresses. Here’s the website.

November 16, 2009 at 2:41 amyou can export a DV AVI directly from FCP. Select “File>export>using quicktime conversion…” Then select format “AVI.” Then you can select DV in the options dialog box. I’ve used this in the past to deliver reference movies to PC based audio facilities and they’ve worked fine. I can’t say for sure if the quality will be good enough for a “master,” because I’ve only every used this for reference material, so I’d recommend testing a short segment first.
Hope this helps,

November 16, 2009 at 10:10 amIt should be a way to really “re-wrap” the DV codec.
Whenever you go DV QT to DV AVI, you lose a generation.

Xavier has posted that he’s cutting ProResLT and needs to master out to DV AVI (so obviously there is going to be a first generational loss in exporting that master)
Matt is just pointing out there is no specific need to export a DV MOV and “rewrap” as its possible to master directly to DV AVI from FCP’s Quicktime Conversion options.
If for whatever reason, using Compressor to make a DV MOV is preferred, then sure enough MPEG Streamclip (as already recommended) can be used to rewrap as AVI (ie without any recompression).Best

November 16, 2009 at 2:28 pmDear Andy,
I just wrote that there is not “re-wrapping” but rendering when going QT>AVID>QT.
Sure no need to go to QT DV, but directly to AVID with QT.
