  • Would you use a plug-in to get 3D layers?

Posted by Zax Dow on July 15, 2005 at 3:37 am

I asked this question at the end of a previous thread and got a rousing silence in reply. Let me ask it again to make sure that it didn’t just get buried.

If you are one of the people who seems to be interested in 3D space in Motion, would you still be interested if you had to use a plug-in to do it?

    Here’s the workflow…
    1- Add a plug-in to a canvas-sized Color Solid.
2- Drag the images and movies you want to be 3D into the image wells in the plug-in. This turns the images into 3D planes.

    – You could animate position, rotation and size of each 3D object.
    – Each 3D object could be a plane/sphere/cube/cylinder/cone/etc.
    – Up to 10 3D objects per instance of the plug-in would be supported.
    – All 3D objects within one instance of the plug-in would interact with each other.
    – Parenting of one 3D object to another would be supported.
    – You could animate the camera.
    – You could animate up to four lights.

Would that be of value to you? Just wondering.

Sure- I’d be very curious to see if this is even possible. I’d wonder if it could be done within a plugin without major changes to the core Motion architecture.

If anyone can do it, Zax can. I’d love to give this a whirl when it’s ready for trial runs. Thanks.

I own Invigorator Pro and use it in AE for some things. It’s a great plug-in for AE. It’s really easy to bring in a client’s vector logo and extrude it, bevel, at Shine to it, and poof, you have a nice logo treatment for the opening of a piece. And being able to bring in a 3D object and rotate the thing or do 3D beveled text is great too.

If it could be applied to Motion layers, that would be great.

But being able to bring in a 3D object or extrude a logo in Motion and not have to go out to a 3D application is something a lot of people would want to do, IMHO.

Agreed, would love to see this. Zaxwerks products are great – been using 3D flag in AE yesterday, very nice.

Yes we would be very interested as long as it doesn’t cost more than the program. $299 for a plugin for a $300 program just doesn’t seem right. So if you can make it for less with most of the features you mentioned with some sort of introductory pricing you would definetely have buyers. Basically if we could get Invigorator pro for motion for $200 we would buy it.

[Nik Manning] “Yes we would be very interested as long as it doesn’t cost more than the program. $299 for a plugin for a $300 program just doesn’t seem right.”

That all depends on the plug-in. Motion is $299 because it’s an Apple software that requires Apple hardware to run. Ultimately Apple is a hardware company and will sell the software cheaply to sell the hardware.

Boris Continuum complete is $700 – $800 which is a fanstastic set of plug-ins that add a lot of new features and effects to Motion. It’s a lot more than the original program, but then Motion would not be at that price if it was released by someone other than Apple.

So how much is the plug-in worth to you? The cost of the original application software is irrelevant.
