Working with XDCAM EX footage on non-FCP Macs.

January 31, 2008 at 9:06 pmThe company I work for just got a Sony EX1. Gorgeous footage. But the .MOVs the Sony Transfer software gives me are only viewable on Final Cut workstations. Obviously, other workstations (After Effects, Logic, etc) need to work these movies. I know it’s a question of codecs. I’ve copied all the codecs from my FCS Mac’s HD/Library/Quicktime folder, but the EX1 movies still open up as blank white movies on other workstations.
On the Apple boards, I was advised that I either needed to buy another copy of Final Cut ($1000) or Flip4Mac’s MXF plug-in for $500. That can’t be right, can it?? I really don’t want to spend the time transcoding all footage to ProRes or Uncompressed. That’ll put a huge time bottleneck on working with this footage.
Any other solutions?
