A friend of mine gave me some mpg footage so i could do some editing. First of all i viewed the clips from Quick time and there was no audio. When i imported the footage in FCP there was again no audio and the image is funny and it needs rendering. How can i work with this footage effectively in FCP?

You need to convert it to a codec that FCP recognizes as a realtime codec, such as DV, DV50, or ProRes. You can use QT Player, Compressor, or Mpeg Streamclip.
