Working with CRAZY weird aspect ratio without constant rendering?

Something similar to this might already be posted but I seriously doubt it.
Received 16:9 footage shot Alexa and RED (the Alexa failed halfway through the day…strange). All RED footage has been transcoded to ProRes4444 and matches exactly the properties of the Alexa footage.
The DP used very old, Russian LOMO anamorphic lenses and (thank god) a frame chart with a circle. When I distort the clip my aspect comes out to something like 3.35:1.
Everything is good so far except that in order to work with that ratio, I’m having to render out every single clip as I go along. Any changes require a re-render.
My sequence settings are as follows:

working off of a firewire 800 shuttle drive (i’m in the field).I thought keeping the clip size at 100% would eliminate the need for constant rendering. Also, I tried playback settings at safe and unlimited RT, low-quality video playback, etc. I left it at full frame rate always because its a music video and sync is important. Nothing seems to even get me to even low-res playable stuff.
Do I need to copy all the working clips to the internal drive? I hope not, this is a tight-turnaround job and that would present difficulties.

Pretty sure that PRORES 4444 may be a bit too fat for RT playback from a FW800 drive. Also any clips that you have applied a distortion setting will probably need to be rendered.

That’s what I’m thinking. Is there any workaround that doesn’t involve a transcode or copying the files to a system drive?

Anytime you add a motion effect, you are going to need to render.
I would work at a timeline that matches your footage (1920×1080). You can then choose to distort (render) or not. This way, you won’t have the weird sequence setting to deal with either.

I would follow Jeremy’s advice,[Fred Miller] “Pretty sure that PRORES 4444 may be a bit too fat for RT playback from a FW800 drive.”
Apple Prores444 is some 330Mbps data rate, while FW-800 supports 800Mbps.
It should be no problem to play one stream in RT.
