I have been creating DVDs with both stereo and surround sound for quite sometime now and I’m starting to wonder, do I need the stereo track at all? My question is if I only put the surround sound on the DVD will players that don’t have a 5.1 system dowmmix the surround to stereo?

The reason I ask is because all the movies I watch on Blu Ray and DVD don’t have the option to choose Stereo or Surround. When I play them on either my 5.1 system or just a cheap DVD player hooked straight to a tv the audio plays correctly, as in its surround on the 5.1 and stereo on the tv.

I do concert DVDs and some clients like to have the surround sound option. So I need to be certain if I put out a product with only surround sound on it that no matter what people play the DVD in it will play back correctly.

Sorry if this doesn’t make any since, any help or input on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

If you author to 5.1 the DVD player will respond to what the viewing device is capable of
