Working with 3K footage in FCP X?
A client recently shot a bunch of 3K footage on the RED Scarlet, but FCP X seems to default to either 2K or 4K.
This may be a dumb question (I genuinely don’t know), but if the video will ultimately be compressed in HD for the web, do you think I should just edit the entire video in a 2K timeline? Is there any difference, considering that the final product will be downressed regardless?

I would edit it in a 1080p project. That will give you the option of either scaling the footage down, or cropping it. I think this is a huge advantage for you because going from 3k to 1080p will give you a lot of room to recompose shots through cropping or zooming in without losing quality.

I edit in whatever format I shot my Scarlet in with the exception of 1K@120fps (waiting on EPIC upgrade).
You can keep your files at 3K in FCPX.
You could also just proxie them as well which brings them down to smaller than HD anyway. -
Yes, but I can’t seem to create a 3K timeline. FCPx defaults to either 2K or 4K.

Was the shot 3K?
Just use Set Based on First Video Clip under Custom option in Project.
