    Hi

I am cutting a documentary and the majority of footage is shot on on Cannon XF305 at 1920×1080 25 fps and converted to apple prores 422 (HQ) via mpeg streamclip.

There has also been some extra footage shot on a canon 5D at 1280×720 50fps. Some of this is to look slomo, however an interview has also been accidentally recorded in this format which is not for slomo.

I plan to work with the footage in the following way:

    1. Working on a 1920×1080 apple pro res 25fps timeline as the film has to be delivered to these specs.
    2. For the 720p50 footage that is NOT intended to be slomo, converting this to 25fps and 1920×1080 apple pro res via mpeg streamclip, to avoid having to render in FCP.
    3. For the 720p50 footage that IS intended to be used slomo, converting to 1920×1080 apple pro res via mpeg streamclip and retaining it at 50 fps. Then slowing it down to 50% when editing in FCP.

Just wanted opinions on whether these methods are a good way to go in terms of converting the footage.

    Thanks

    Ceri

Or wondering if its best to keep the 5D footage at 720 then allow FCP to scale it up when it is dropped on the timeline

[Ceri Allen] “1. Working on a 1920×1080 apple pro res 25fps timeline as the film has to be delivered to these specs.”

    Good…

[Ceri Allen] “2. For the 720p50 footage that is NOT intended to be slomo, converting this to 25fps and 1920×1080 apple pro res via mpeg streamclip, to avoid having to render in FCP.”

OK…Compressor does better at scaling than MPEG STREAMCLIP…but it doesn’t work with the MXF that the 305 shoots…so that might be fine.

Well…that won’t quite work. For the slow motion footage I recommend using Cinema Tools to CONFORM it to 25fps. That will make a frame for frame conversion. Just putting 50fps footage into a 25fps timeline and slowing it down..won’t work like you think. Putting 50fps into a 25fps timeline makes it now 25fps. So you slow that down and you’ll get stuttery repeated frames. This is why you need to use Cinema Tools. I have a tutorial on how to do that:
