    Hi,

Since going High Def my system has slowed to a crawl. Sometimes I have to wait several minutes when I jump around on the timeline for the cursor to arrive at that location, ready to play both the audio and video.

I am using both files from a Tricaster (MPEG-2) and Canon XF305 (MXF). The last MPEG-2 file was 1 hr 15 minutes, approx. 48 gigs.

I am using Windows XP 32 bit SP3
    Sony Vegas 10a. 32 bit
    RAM 2 Gig
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Processor (2.5 GHz)

in Vegas Dynamic Ram preview is set to 350 mgs
Max Number of Rendering Threads 4

Is there a setting I can change?
Would increasing the ram do much?
in the next few months, I plan on upgrading the computer system…

    Thanks! James

James, a core 2 quad is somewhat underpowered for the kind of footage you’re trying to use on it.
I just took delivery of a Tricaster too and had no issues on the quad core box I have, even with 1080i footage in HQ mode.
I haven’t tried anything fancy yet but basic single stream playback was just fine.
Hopefully your new machine will be an i7 with lots of RAM and 64-bit Windows 7.
Then you’ll be flying around the timeline and wondering why you waited so long to upgrade 🙂

Yea, a quad core must have 8 gigs of ram. Punch up your resource monitor/ You will see that your ram is maxed out and you are hitting the Swap File “Virtual Memory”!

I using 9e consitantly hit 6.5 to 7.5 gig utilization.

Your processor is okay for HD, just about 20% slower than an I7 92o during render times.

Up grade to Win7 x64 pro.
    throw in 6 more gigs…

    You’ll be flying smooth…
Wait for sandy bridge or Interlogos from AMD.

Mike and David, Thanks for your advice.

Maybe an interim step would be to upgrade to Win 7 Pro and increase the ram to 8 gig, as David recommended.

Would you recommend installing Win 7 Pro OEM, instead of the upgrade Win 7 Pro? Seems like it is always better to start with a fresh install. And the OEM version is less expensive…

    Thanks, James
