  • Working in AE at 4K for film @ 1:85?

Trying to sort out the best dimensions to be working at in After Effects for a film project and would be grateful for some assistance.

I’ve been informed that the client will be working in a full frame aspect ratio in a UHD/ 1080 space so references are exported with a 1.85 letterbox mask to make sure animation/graphics don’t go into space we can’t use. The client is using 1920×1080 proxies until final rendering.

I’ve been told the final output will be:

    “4K (4096 x 2160) Full Frame, 23.98. 1.85 aspect ratio.”

    4096 x 2160 appears to be 1.90 however.

    I believe 1.85 aspect ratio would actually be “4096 x 2214” or “4096 x 2211”?

Should I work in a comp at 4096 x 2214 and render out at that resolution?

Or should I work at 4096 x 2160 and render with a mask on the footage?

I tried dropping a 1:85 aspect ratio letterbox onto a 4096 x 2160 comp, but the bars appear smaller and dont equate to 4096 x 2214 for some reason. Very confused.

Any thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks!

For what it’s worth, you might not even need to work at that resolution. A LOT of films (including Marvel movies) usually work at 2k and then upscale.

I know in the past I was told to keep it under as much as possible (VFX).

But for Mograph I still build at full 4K DCI res and deal with whatever they wish after.

And yes I even go full frame and assume they will blank to their liking.

It’s only when I’m compositing (VFX) that I try to get their target res.

Saves me from headaches, especially rotoscoping.

If you are working 1.85 at 4K, you would want to work at 4096*2214. If you worked at 2160 that would mean they are masking the sides, not sure why anyone would want to do that today.

Because of the discrepancies, I would just call up and ask exactly what they want from you in terms of graphics. Make sure you get exact specifics and then I would immediately send them a test render and have them confirm that it’s correct.

I can tell you from experience that even if you are right and send them the correct aspect ratio, if they didn’t know really what they wanted, you will be the one doing extra work.
