workflow, XDCAM FCP
Posted by Geof Gilland on February 4, 2009 at 5:46 pmWe are shooting in XDCAM HD with PDW700 using 422 XDCAM 1080/60i, 50Mbs. To get the best output of finished timelines/masters, would that be back through the FCP Export to XDCAM to our PDWHD1500 deck via firewire; or are there alternatives such as using a AJA or other card, another codec, and HDSDI to our PDWHD1500 deck. Thanks for the suggestions….

February 5, 2009 at 5:31 amHi Geof,
If you are starting in XDCAM HD and finish in the same format, I don’t see the point to go to another codec and back to XDCAM HD.
If you would start with a lesser quality codec (420) , that path could be interesting, but for your original 422 is not necessary.
High quality picture and a really straightforward workflow. Perfect.

February 6, 2009 at 12:07 pmHI,
I’m actually very very new to editing. I’m currently about to work as an assistant on my 1st ever project, the following is my query
The footage is going to be using HDCAM 1440*1080P, And the final output required by the client is DigiBeta as its for telecast & this is the format they use. We’ll have a HDCAM deck and FCP 6 made available for this project.
Also we’ve got limited storage space as its going to be a long project(quite a few episodes). We’ll need to downconvert the HD footage and get the final output to DigiBeta tape.
-Can I downconvert the HD footage to say DV PAL during capture for offline editing? and use ProRes 422(1440*1080 25p)when going online also is it possible to master in DigiBeta.
I was told if there is a Decklink Extreme capture card then I can do both.. downconvert to DV PAL for editing and also go get a final out on to DigiBeta. But I was told the machine we’ll have does’nt have Decklink Extreme.
Please can you suggest a proper workflow for the above. Thanking you – Abraham

February 6, 2009 at 2:53 pmHi Abraham,
Yes you can capture SD with DV or other codec and after re-capture full size in ProRess or Uncompressed.
I would skip the DV step.
ProRess HQ SD is 64Mbps. A bit more than DV50.

February 7, 2009 at 9:59 amThanks a lot Rafael for your quick response. I had one more query, if you could asnswer:-
I’d like to know the process with which I could give a digi transfer directly from FCP without a tech glitch.
Do I need to scale down my image in the software(FCP) or would it be better if I only use the output seting in Declink card i.e. HD to SD Letterbox 16:9
(Shooting on F900 Sony HD camera with 25 fps and progressive scanning.)Thanks again Rafael for your help. Really appreciate it.
