Workflow- Using Lock Box/ Jam Slate And Syncing in FCP 7
Hi,
I’m working on a feature where the Sound Mixer has jammed the TC to the Slate and it does match and can be synced using the “Merge Clips” button in FCP and syncing using the Timecode button. And it works, however….
I’m finding that the clap is a couple frames off, not a big deal in Avid because I can just use the “slip” tool, but it seems in order to do it in FCP I have to drop it into a sequence and then use the slip tool (which can’t be used if clips are butted next to each other). Is there an easier/ better way to do this? Otherwise it looks likes syncing it using the ins and outs will be faster.

You could use my BWF_QT merge.
It can insert the sound into the QT with a custom offset.

This looks to be mainly for files where there is no TC or the TC is very off, which is not the case for me. There is TC and it does match the video but it is a frame or two off, and I need to move the audio so that the two are properly in sync.
I’d also like to not go through a third-party software like VideoToolShed or PluralEyes as there should be SOME way of doing this in FCP without having to create a sequence for every clip or having the red -01 on my clips (which makes it disconcerting to my editor).

These tools are for cases where there is common timecode.
And afaik, there is no other way to do it in FCP than as you describe.But, how is it possible there is a mismatch.
Are you sure FCP is setup correctly?
(A wrong setup can be very annoying when dealing with BWF files…)Bouke

no need to fix the clips one by one in a sequence
merge all your clips,
drop all in a timeline, and slip as a group.oh.. i see you have tried that as you wrote “(which can’t be used if clips are butted next to each other)”
that is not quite correct
is is more likely that you have some clips where the sound is shorter than the image, and it is those clips that are hindering the processyou could locate those clips (“next track gap” is the command that would help, you have to find that in the modify keyboard window) and put the audio on a lower track,
slip the other one, then do “something else” with the short clips.
it’s a job of work, i’m afraid unless you use some outside toolbetter than merging perhaps, is to use the “create multiclip sequence” function.

it seems a bit messy, and there is a certain amount of tidying up to do.but i cant stand the merging process: find the matching clips, select them open the merge box, select timecode, hit OK, so most other solutions seems better to me!
personally, i use Sync n Link, a 3rd party app, and in that you can set an offset.
a bit pricey, compared to Bouke’s offeringnick
