workflow for 1080i on a 720p24 Timeline

The Kona will not capture 1080 as 720. I know…I just captured 1080 yesterday for my 720p DVCPRO HD project. What I did was capture the 1080i as 1080i, then used COMPRESSOR to convert to DVCPRO HD 720p24. But it was progressive footage, 1080p 23.98, so it all matched perfectly. If your footage is 1080i 29.97, you will first need to remove the pulldown with Cinema Tools, THEN use Compressor to convert.

Well it will, it just won’t capture 1080i 29.97 to 720p24. If your frame rates match (such as 1080psf23.98 to 720p23.98) the Kona will most definitely do it. It will also convert 1080 29.97 to 720p 59.94.

If you need to convert 1080i29.97 to 720p23.98, you can use compressor for this as Shane says. Your mileage may vary, just make sure you have all the setting correct 😉 You can also send this out for hardware converion with a Teranex or Alchemist and get it confromed to 1080 23.98 with great results. Be prepared to pay for the privilege.

Hello Shane et al,

I just had a thought after reading your post above. I have some footage shot with a Canon HV20 in its 24p mode and it really is 1080/60i. My plan is to convert it to 1080/24p. Do I (or should I) remove the pull-down as you mention in the post above using Cinema Tools? I have used a process using Compressor that “converts” the 1080/60i to Apple ProRes422. The workflow then was to import the ProRes422 clips into a new sequence in FCP on a 24 (23.976) timeline. Does the conversion to ProRes422 remove the pulldown?

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!

I called Walter for help on this, as three of our DVCPRO HD tapes were shot 1080sf23.98 instead of 720p24. I tried to find the deck menu in the 1200 to downconvert to 720 but it was missing, so I set 720p 23.98 as my PRIMARY, 1080sf23.98 as my secondary in the Kona CP and BOOM, got the 1080 to 720 conversion box to appear. Capturing fine now.

Thanks for that Jeremy…I thought it could do this. Oh, and thanks to Walter for walking me thru this as he made a cappachino for a client.

Ok, I’m missing something…

Captured my footage as HDV 1080i60 (1440×1080, 29.97, upper dominance)

I need to take it to HDV 720p24.

1. I tried Cinema Tools – get an error about temporal compression. No bueno.
2. I tried Episode Pro – Notice a gamma shift and a slight push on the shot… Not acceptable.
3. I tried Compressor – The Reverse Telecine option in the Frame Tools creates 23.98, not 24)

Still haven’t figured out the best way to go from 1080 to 720 either.

Any help would be much appreciated.
