hello, everyone,

thanks for all of your help so far. i have another question for you all.

i’ve edited a short film using FCP, and now i’d like to do some color correction.

a friend has offered his services using autodesk smoke, but he doesn’t have much experience working with footage in my format (i shot using a panasonic hvx200 HD camera, 720pn24, 16:9 aspect ratio).

can anyone tell me what the best file format is for handing the movie over to my friend? obviously, i ‘d like minimal or no loss of picture quality.

and then could someone tell me exactly which settings to use in FCP? in particular, i am not sure if i should check the “de-interlace video” box.

don’t deinterlace progressive scan footage…

Can’t the smoke system see the video or something? If you change any setting from the native setting, you’re gonna lose some quality.

I’d certainly try a native clip in the Smoke before I transcoded the viceo to something else.

hi, jerry,

thanks for your response. i’ve been told that exporting my project as an XML is probably the best way to go, although others say that a TGA (targa) is preferable.

any thoughts?

We’ll do TGA sequences (use to do SGI sequences) from FCP to our smoke, and it works fine. The only problem is that he brings it into smoke it’s all gonna be 1 clip, so he’ll have to break it up a billion times to do the CC.

I’d try the XML export and recapture in Smoke… that way there’s no recompression going on in the process.

Definitely recapture on smoke.

Targa sequences are horrendous time consuming.

The latest version of smoke could import some quicktime file types.

Glad I sold mine.

You have all the clips in FCP in their native quality. What stops you from CCing them in FCP? Use Colorista, use Color, and between them there’s not much you can’t do in FCP that you can in smoke.
