  • Workflow Advice? HDV PAL + DV PAL = FCS 2 on an older G5?

    Hi there!

I’m hoping to get some advice…

Just about to start work on the OFFLINE edit of a documentary that is:

    50% HDV PAL 1080i/50
    50% DVCAM PAL (mostly anamorphic – some 4X3 – some 16mm)

From all I’ve researched this seems very much like a recipe for FCP 6 and ProRes…

Will those in the know please weigh in on the best approach to cutting this material?

Steve Connor and Graeme Nattress please set me straight!

I’m happy to scale half the stuff down to SD PAL and/or scale the other half up to 1080i.

My real goal is to not have a lot of crashing/playback difficulties while we get the story roughed out.

Not too married to having a huge image as it IS an offline and my monitor’s just a 20 incher anyway…

    My system is:

    2 GHz PowerPC G5
    1 GB DDR SDRAM
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

We would be using FW 800 drives (probably 1-2 TB on 1 or 2 drives)

I would love to not have to upgrade my CPU unless it’s absolutely necessary…

    1) What would be the best codec/resolution for our OFFLINE timeline?

    2) Will the 1080i/50 – scaled up DV PAL/25 mixture cause playback problems?

    3) Would the 4×3 be automatically pillarboxed or could we set it to blow up to a cropped 16×9?

    4) What would be the best path down the road to onlining?

I read the COW article about quarter res ProRes set at half quality.

    5) Would that setting give me more luck with RT scaling of multiple streams?

    6) Are there further HDV bugaboos I should be aware of?

    7) Do I really need to fork over 2.5 k for the Xeon 4-Core plus some RAM?

I’m trying to convince the producer to front the money for FCS 2 as it will save her lots of time and money.

    8) Would there be any intelligent way to work with this stuff in FCP 5?

Any and all advice to all these ridiculous questions would be more than welcome!

    Thanks guys!

    Cheers,

    Jim Bruce
