I have a question about working with footage taken from The Red HD camera and importing it into FCP 5. Not sure if this has been posted before here but just wondering if anyone has any step by step instructions on how to import the files into FCP 5. Also what are the system requirements when using footage from The Red. Please let me know and thank you for your time. Also if there are any video tutorials on this this please if you can post a link to it. Thanks again.

There’s a white paper on the support page of the Red site that covers this.

[Chris Woods] “Also what are the system requirements when using footage from The Red.”

First off, you’ll need a Intel Mac. That will allow you to use one of RED’s tools like REDRushes, REDAlert, or REDCine. From there you can encode the files to any format that is supported in FCP5.

FCP 5 has two main challenges when dealing with RED footage. First, it does support the RED QuickTime proxy files and second, it doesn’t support ProRes.

There are a lot of great workflows for FCP 6 and if you’re dealing with RED, it’s well worth the $500 upgrade to get FCS2.

Thanks for posting. I don’t have an Intel MAC, but I am considering getting the upgrade. Can I still edit footage from the RED on FCP 6 with a regular G5? I’m also looking through the White Paper that I downloaded from their site.

    No
Not in redcode and barely in ProRes.

Thanks for writing back. Just wondering can you still use footage from the RED without Redcode and ProRes, or is that making the work harder. And if I need to get a Intel processor is it best to buy a whole new MAC or can I just replace the processor. Right now I have a G5 that’s a 1.6 GHz Power PC I got about 5 years ago. Just wondering what is easier and cheaper. Thank you for your time.

There is no easier cheaper with RED, your computer needs to be as current as your camera.
and Intel only for redcode processing.

I have another RED question. I know that the best way is to use a MAC with intel and have FCS 2. But the filmmakers that I’m editing for are wondering if I can just edit with only using the Quicktime files on my current G5 without getting the one with an intel processor? Just wondering and thanks again.
