  • Wondering how to animate a shot in my title sequence…

Hey guys – I’ve got an idea for a shot that I’m not too sure how to implement in After Effects.

I want there to be a black screen – then a lightning strike (O.S.) that, when it strikes) lights up hundreds of cockroaches filling the screen (that were presumably always there). Then, they all scatter outwards from the center of the screen – slowly uncovering the movie’s title engraved on the ground underneath them.

I’ve got an overhead shot of a cockroach on a green screen (always centered) and walking fast straight ahead. Would I be able to use something like Red Giant’s form for this?? Or is this kind of title sequence only applicable within a 3d program??

I don’t understand what Form or 3D have to do with this, unless I’m completely mis-visualizing what you’re describing.

You can use a particle effect (Particle Playground or whatver you have available) to turn one roach into many and have them scatter.

Under the layer with the particle roaches, you have your title layer. I’d probably use layer styles to create the look of the engraved text. Here’s an After Effects Community Help search for ‘engraved text’ to get you going in the right direction.

Thanks! I’ve figured out how to turn one roach into a particle – but how do I get them to all scatter in the direction of their head (going forward) from the center of the screen – forming a circle clearing?

Orienting individual particles is different for each particle effect. The Particle Playground effect has an Auto-Orient Rotation option.

You really need to just play around with, experiment with, read about, and learn a particle effect. They’re deep, fun effects.
