wmv encoding PAINFULLY slow!!
Hi all,
I’ve a client who’s asked me to encode some DV footage as WMV files..they didn’t specify (or know tbh!) data rates, etc. so I’ve just done full frame 720×576 at 4mb/s.
Now it’s a 16min clip (captured to Adobe DV codec) and it’s taking about 2-3hrs to render the wmv!?! Now, I usually encode to MPG1/2 and Adobe Media Encoder generally chuggs out at between 1 – 2x speed, which is fine. In this case I have no choice..
Firstly I did 2pass variable at 4mb/s and it was taking forever. I aborted and went for 1 pass variable 4mb – it’s still rendering in 2 passes though for some reason. The 1st pass went quite quickly (1-2 mins) but the 2nd one is working at a rate of 0.01% a second (2-3 frames a second)
Have I got something setup wrong, or is WMV just *REALLY* slow!?

Is your source video DV?
What effects have you applied? Any color correction?WMV encoding typically takes a lot longer than Mpeg 2, but not as long as you are experiencing. I suspect your high bitrate might be part of the problem. I find that 2.5 mbps gets as good results as higher bitrates.

Yeah I grabbed it in via my Decklink in DV codec (I usually grab everything in uncompressed from digi, but in this case I didn’t see the point.) Would it be quicker if my source video was uncompressed?
I’ve applied no effects, just literally grabbed it in, put on the timeline, trimmed work area and set it encoding.
It’s about 3/4 of the way there now and my client is waiting for it, so on this occasion I’ll leave it be..but I’ll test some lower bitrate tests later on. I’d have thought that the *more* compressed your encoded video the longer it’d take?..seeing as the encoder has more work to do?

Is your uncompressed source file on the same HD as your output? Disc I/O may be the delay. Choose another disc for output.
