    Hey all!

Just a quick note to say I start Directing my first independent short film today for the next three days. It’s an original script by a buddy of mine, which I’ve helped to re-write and our own Clay Walker will be the D.P. We’re shooting with a Varicam and a full set of 7 prime lenses (thank you Panasonic and Canon!). AJA products will be making a cameo. To John Abt and Nick Rashby, we went with the little pink number for the the Io, very sexy. 🙂

It’s cool to finally get to just do our own project for no other reason than we want to. So wish us luck and I’ll let you know how it all went on Monday, if I can wake up.

    Hey Walter-

Good luck, and make sure Clay takes the lens cap off 😉

I’m sure it will go great, but if the Io pulls any prima-dona routines, or doesn’t like it’s trailer or the craft services, just threaten to unplug it.

Ha ha! Yeah, if it gives me any lip I’ll tell it what we’ll do with its parts.

Hey Wally, best of luck to you, dude. I’m sure you guys will have a blast. Nice to hear you’re using top-rated gear too. The primes will really make it shine. On a recent music video I onlined a couple of months ago, I convinced the producer/director to shoot with a full box of primes. Worked out great.

We’re almost done with an indie short here as well. About two years in the works now. I’m in the middle of finishing up the musical score and it’ll be done. Yay!

If you guys pull off your completion to the exact target date or sooner, I’ll be extremely impressed! Tough to do!!! =)

    Best to ya,

    [Marion Laney] “Walter,
    Are you awake yet???

Hey Marion! Yes, just now I am awake! We did a hard push on the last day starting at 7:30am on Sunday and wrapping the final primary scene at 9:30am Monday. We knocked out about 85 primary shots in the three days of shooting and have about 30 computer shots that still need to be completed, but the camera and lenses go back today, so we’ll reschedule for those. At least we don’t need anyone but the D.P. to be there since they’re closeups.

What a weekend! Thanks to you and the folks at Panasonic, we had a great time with the Varicam and really pushed it in low light situations. Overall the camera performed perfectly though it’s a definite that the camera really isn’t all that great with low light situations and introduces more noise than expected. You really need to finesse the settings to get rid of as much noise as possible.

Panasonic really needs to update their manual though because it took almost an hour for Clay to figure out that because we were using Prime Lenses from Canon which DON’T have auto-iris on them, he could not get the black balance to work. Black balance automatically closes the iris and then does the setting. Well, since the iris would not close automatically, it didn’t work. Nothing about working with non-auto iris lenses in the manual, so Clay got a hold of the camera assist you mentioned and they figured it out.

And speaking of lenses, Wow! Canon came through with 7 freshly minted prime lenses that just made all the difference in the world. Clay was able to deliver exactly the angle and composition we wanted without having to compromise because we were stuck with a single lens. I belive we have the 5mm up to the 55mm and their gorgeous zoom lens.

That’s all I can say at this point. Wow! From our all volunteer crew to our actress, Wow!

And Clay, I can’t thank you enough for the work you did as the D.P. Outstanding camera setups and you just made my life much easier.

I’ll update you all as wel move along with the project. Time to return the equipment.

geez, if only I had seen this last week it would have saved me hours of reading the manual that came with these things…

note to self, “take the lens cap – off.”

    Thanks.
