I am attempting to create an effect where the windshield of a vehicle will appear to have been broken (seen breaking), when the vehicle has hit an object inside AE. The subject that will be busting the windshield will be greenscreened, along with the vehicle, both of which will be separately greenscreened. The two will be composited together for the final result. The effect will be seen from within the car, as if the camera is in the backseat of the vehicle. Any ideas on how to best approach creating this breaking windshield effect?

Find and old windshield… break it a fashion you want to look like (or, find a windlshield that is already broke the way you want it to look)… green screen the background… then, film or photograph the broken windshield from the same angle you want the final shot to look like… superimpose using a seperate layer to put into project. You don’t even need AE to do this effect…. a pro-level editing software should be able to do this.

Shatter is the go-to filter for breaking glass. However, it’s a simulation. The result is a bit stylized.

As Joe suggests, the best realism is accomplished with practical effects. That’s how we did effects for a hundred years: we blew stuff up.

Go to the great videocopilot.net – Adam has a tutorial on hitting someone with a vehicle and the windshield cracking.
