June 10, 2005 at 12:28 amHey guys. I’m at WWDC. As the days go by, less and less developers are fearful of this transition as we get more information. If you watch the Keynote, you will notice that everyone laughed right at about the halfway point as Jobs was looking for apps to run after he revealed he’s running a Macintel. The reason everyone laughed is because I asked Steve to run Final Cut.
That said, the biggest issue for video will be for apps that have optimized their code for Altivec. These optimizations will need a do over.
I spoke with ATTO and they think this switch over will help speed things up for they will need to take out all the code in their driver that flips the data order around for the Mac on PowerPC.
Hmmmm. Things are looking better.

June 10, 2005 at 4:40 amI remember a discussion on the forums years ago about the PowerPC “ceiling.” Most seemed to believe 3Ghz processors was it. Now with Intel, is it possible to have 4 and 5 GHz Macs??? Then the days of Cinewave and Kona2 capture cards with on-board processing will be a thing of the past. These faster chips will do everything and a $200 capture card might be all we need!
I’m also just an editor, so feel free to destroy my logic. But I don’t think I’m too far off. no?

June 10, 2005 at 3:15 pm‘Course I’m speculating, but I figure that these cards are going to work in the future Macs.. but also figure that they are 18 months away, they’ll show up in the powermacs when Intel ships the dual core high end chips… and we’ll see two of them in a PM… by that time, AJA will have come up with something new to slap in the mahines and we’ll all be wanting whatever it is…

I hope not! My Cinewave is going on 5 years of service (has it been that long?)
I’m not one to buy every new piece of hardware that comes out, so when I get the Kona 2, I hope it will last as long and expand as well as my Cinewave did…no matter what Apple’s next machine or software release is.Ron
