Will the Dell 24” work as good as the Apple 23″” with BMD ?
Posted by Uwe Klimmeck on August 26, 2005 at 1:49 pmA bit off topic, but as I’ve read about washed out greys from the Apple Cinema Displays I’m considering to buy the Dell Ultrasharp instead.
Will I run into any trouble with HD-monitoring from Multibridge ?Greetings

August 26, 2005 at 4:01 pmNo, you won’t. The Dell is actually a much better monitor. I wish I had gotten it. My 23″ Cinema Display has lines burned in on it, and whites and greys have a pinkish tint to them.

August 26, 2005 at 4:13 pmJust to be fair, there have been bad reports regarding the Dell monitor as well from several seasoned vets who know what they’re looking for and talking about. Its a tricky business, and one that requires using your own eyeballs. No one can tell you if you’re going tp be pleased with a monitor until you look at it yourself.

August 26, 2005 at 4:30 pmThe guy that runs https://www.hdforindies.com/ has blogged a couple of experiences with his Dell 24 that might be worth reading.
I think like most things, you get what you pay for. In many ways the two monitors offer the same guts and performance. The Dell has some extra inputs that may or may not be more trouble than they are worth…based on what the hdforindies person found out.
Dell buys more LCDs than anybody in the world and they get the best pricing. But Apple supposedly only buys the best of those LCDs and turns down others that don’t adhere to their strict quality standards. I’ve heard this translate to an Apple screen may have one dead pixel and make it though inspection but a Dell could have five.
I think the main price difference may show up in level of customer service you can expect. Get a bad pixel or uneven backlight on the Apple and you can probably drop by an Apple store and exchange the monitor with no questions asked. Have a problem with the Dell and prepare yourself for long holdtimes with some call center in India. When you finally get your replacement monitor, you’ll realize that they shipped you some refurb with another set of issues.
If you’re somebody that bills $100+ an hour, consider how much time and money can be wasted by suffering through some annoying hardware service issue. Maybe you don’t have a local Apple Store to visit and you’ll be dealing long distance with both Apple or Dell. That kind of levels the playing field.

August 26, 2005 at 9:25 pmthe Dell 2405FPW is an excellent monitor. It works well with both Blackmagic HD Link and AJA HDP. It works well with both Blackmagic and AJA products in general. Electronic Arts (the video game people) just bought 150 of these monitors – money is not the issue for them in their game development purposes. I do not “buy” the “Apple picks the best of the bunch” nonsense, as I can assure you that I have seen more bad Hitachi SATA drives in Apple “hand selected” XServe RAID arrays, than any other
source of Hitachi SATA drives, so this “hand picked” stuff is just nonsense. An excellent alternative to both of these monitors is the Sony SDM-P234b, which cost more than both of them, but is teriffic. (It does not offer video inputs, so you will have to use the Blackmagic HD Link). Another excellent monitor is the HP L2335. Every monitor I mentioned I have tested, and all do 1920×1280 resolution.
If you are an individual, and looking to save money, you can’t beat the Dell 2405FPW.

August 27, 2005 at 5:32 pmHand pick is nonsense. They choose by assembly line. Chances they come from the same line (especially since the 24″ are still not commodity). What can really be different is the further quality of case assembly, like the backlight, enclosure and electronics. I’m pretty sure apple’s backlight is a lot better than DELL’s. Is it worth the price difference? Probably not…
