  • Will more RAM fix the “Power house” error message?

Posted by Ola Haldor voll on October 13, 2011 at 8:55 am

Simply put, I’ve yet to have a RED project without problems upon rendering.
Some times during playback I get the message about some error with ‘power house’.

When I start rendering, you can bet the same message appears every few minutes, which in turn produces black frames.

I’ve asked a few times, and I see others have too. But I have yet to see a solution for it.

I just spoke to a dop today, and he’ll be shooting on the Epic, and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it if I’m gonna have loads of error messages all over the screen while he’s in the session with me.

    Ouch..

So this “Power House” error is Resolve telling me in a very abstract way that it’s running out of RAM? It’s not tied up to RED in specific?

Have you tested with more ram and Lion ?

I’ve got the stock 6GB the Mac came with. And yes I’m on Lion, 10.7.1 at the moment.
I haven’t tested RED in a while and have been steering clear of RED projects cause of these issues.

I’ll give it a go later today when I’m done onlining an episode.

Adding ram should be pretty simple as you gan buy it from any company that sells ECC versions.

I wonder how long is your sequence as this may also play a role there maybe ?

I had someone breathing down my neck (you know who you are 😉 ) so I took a break in the onlining.

I rendered a 5 min sequence in 4,5K without even a hickup. Looks like the issue will be Resolve(d!) in the update coming soon.

I wonder still if you can meter memory usage ?

I have also 6 gig machine but non of the 4,5 k material at the moment. Epic stuff i mean.

I have similar problems and I have a big 90min Red docu coming next week.

I hope the update is coming soon!?
I’d really need this to be fixed until I’ve the dp and director siiting behind me…

    Thanks!

I’m using an app called iStat Menus, this will add icons to the menu bar which will tell you about the system and its performance.

If I was to guess wildly, I would guess wildly that the dev team is already aware of this issue and working to solve it.

In the meantime, don’t run anything more than resolve on a reboot, and reboot before render. Not 100% effective, but more effective than not doing it.
