April 29, 2005 at 7:41 pmMacromedia, which originally developed Final Cut Pro, actually sold it to Apple with both PC and Mac versions developed. Since it was sold while it was still under development, the Windows version was never released.
Now, of course, FCP is heavily dependent on Core Image/Video techonlogies which exist only in MacOS X, and converting it to run under Windows would be a nightmare.
It should be blindingly obvious, then, that Final Cut Pro and friends will only be available on the Mac. This would only change if Apple had to sell FCP et al to someone else, which seems wildly improbable to say the least.

April 29, 2005 at 9:23 pmBoomie could tell you more about this.
Key Grip–now Final Cut Pro–was to run on Windows NT as a Media 100 application on the PC side.
Macromedia sold both the Mac and PC assets to Apple in 1998 when Media 100 started getting cold feet because of delays. The delays, according to accounts, caused the inspired appearance of Bruce the Wonder Yak by the coders.
If you want to, do a Google.com search for Randy Ubillos you will find he was the project leader for Key Grip and oddly enough the developer of Adobe Priemere.
Here on the Cow you can do a site wide search for key words “Key Grip” and author “Ron Lindeboom” for some further insight.
Inquiring minds…

April 29, 2005 at 10:40 pmHow can you compare FCP render time to Premiere Pro? That is just silly. Apple’s ‘benchmark’ is ridiculous. There are so many variables to consider – CPU, RAM, FSB, floating point, codec, render engine, etc, etc. – that it is absolutely worthless.
It can be done – Sorenson Squeeze, Adobe Premiere [prior to version 6 and Pro], After Effects, Photoshop, Lightwave, all perform well on both platforms.

Excellent support. They’ve helped me out a few times. Much better support than some companies out there.

April 30, 2005 at 12:00 amWell in my opinion they have one of the worse support – at least in regards to this industry. Huge Systems, AJA, and others I would consider excellent. Avid is mediocre. Apple is bad. They still have considerable way to go before I consider their support to be reliable. Don’t even ask them about XSAN…

Unfortunately, this yet remained to be seen. Unless Apple jsut did not mention it, I don’t see FCP 5 codec for Core Image/Video… yet.
