  • Will FCP save time and eliminate steps from our Vegas workflow

I’m trying to bring better efficiencies to our workflow among 4 editors all using Sony Vegas and present a cost/time justification if we switch to Final Cut.

We shoot with 3 JVC 250 U studio cameras, switch with a Broadcast pix switcher, record switched to a Sony DSR 1800 A. We do closed captioning, author a ton of DVD’s, and weekly create Betacam SP station masters.

Our current workflow is very choppy, we have to render files to make DVD’s and tape masters, and can never play the time line and see our edits smoothly.

I would love to hear any cost and time justification scenarios from as many people as possible. Final Cut appears to solve a ton of issues. What benefits do you see?

    Thanks
    Larry

I have never worked with Vegas.

If you’ve done your research and have determined that FCP will save you a ton of issues, then I think you’ve already answered your own question.

Everything we use today is simply a tool. You need to choose the correct tool for your job. It sounds like Vegas is not doing it for you and pretty much anything else from Premiere, FCP to Avid will work better in your situation.

I can tell you that FCP delivers broadcast and feature films every day. In our case, about 100 HD masters to Food Network, PBS and European networks over the past few years and 1000’s of hours of programming over the past 8. We currently have four workstations all networked together on an Ethernet SAN and will have 9 connected in our new facility.

FCP works for us and is a very VERY efficient workflow for sharing projects among editors, in our experience. It’s not perfect and there are pros and cons to all the NLEs out there. Where FCP wins most often is the cost for performance.

[Larry Watts] “we have to render files to make DVD’s and tape masters, and can never play the time line and see our edits smoothly. “

Well, ALSO not having used Vegas, I can say that no matter what, rendering/converting will be involved when making DVDs and tape masters. If you add effects, dissolves, color correct…that will require rendering when done. And AUTHORING DVDs…that requires converting footage to the DVD format and then authoring the DVDs. No matter what NLE you use.

But i swear I keep hearing from Vegas users how awesome and smooth Vegas is…how you can throw all these formats on the timeline and edit WITHOUT rendering. And how quick and smooth it is…and how they are sick of constant rendering in FCP. So now I am confused.

What issues…specifically…are you trying to solve. Give specific examples and let’s see what we come up with.

You will also have to consider learning a new OS if people haven’t used Macs before.

Dv on FCP is a no brainer.
