Why keep files on scratch disk?
I often read comments from people recommending that you should keep all your clips on a scratch disk and edit from there as opposed to keeping things on your internal hard drive. What are the reasons/advantages for doing that?
I keep a fair amount of GBs of files on my main MAC hard drive. Not just related to editing, but all sorts of stuff – tutorials, films, different apps, etc. Is this a bad thing for my editing performance?

#34 – Using your internal system drive as your Capture Scratch.
Shane’s Stock Answer #34 – Internal system drive cannot be used as media drive.
It is not recommended that you use your internal system drive to capture video to.
Your internal drive contains the Mac operating system, and it is very busy constantly loading or referencing system resources. This causes you to drop frames while capturing or playing video files.
For best results, you need either a secondary internal drive (if using a Mac tower), or external drive, like a firewire or eSATA drive. Never USB*.

USB 2 = BAD
Firewire = GOOD
e-SATA = more GOOD
Internal SATA = more better GOOD
eSATA RAID = more MORE better GOOD
4 gig FIbre = Just about the best you can get! (great for SAN networks)
External PCIe = Da Bomb! 5 times faster than FibreShane
