  • Why is the red channel handled so poorly in FCP?

Posted by Zack Gietek on October 28, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I’ve done a graphics plate with red text over white bg, (I’ve also tried black bg)–in AE CS4

The render out of AE looks good- but once imported into FCP to drop in timeline, the red channel has aliasing, (stairs) on diagonal.

The format out of AE is 1280×720 animation codec- all best settings.

The FCP project timeline is DVCPRO HD 720p24 (960×720)—is this why??

I know reds tend to be a pain, but like I said the QT out of AE looks good.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks

    Zack

What’s the red RGB values? Animation is a high resolution, lossless RGB codec, DVCPRO HD isn’t. It’s a video compression codec designed for live action video recording. Never use anything that’s destiny for video above 235s, and for red probably less than 200. That’ll be plenty red enough when viewed on a video monitor.

    All the best,

    Tom
