Yup. When you go to the P2 Import window, you are playing the .mxf files from the CONTENTS folder of the P2 data. Then you import it into QuickTime files to edit.

Do you know why FCP can’t just deal with MXF?

I don’t know much about the file type so I not really sure why you would want to? Would there be an advantage over DVCPROHD?

Does MXF include the audio or is it just video?

    It’s both.

Is there any word, rumors, or gossip about FCP 5.2 … or something, that’ll read mxf?

I guess it doesn’t actually matter, but I’m still wrestling with the firmware update.

Rumors are about Final Cut Pro 6 and Final Cut Extreme. Check Apple’s website on April 15 after about 1:00pm. It’s their big NAB announcement.

I haven’t heard anything about including native mxf editing.

I’m not sure why you’d want to deal with the mxf files? It seems like a hassle to have to keep the contents folder intact and can’t rename your files. Why would you want this when you can have a nice self contained full quality quicktime file. Sure it takes time to import but it’s worth it no?

If you rename the quicktimes how would you ever re-link to the original mxf files for an edl? Wouldn’t everyone appreciate the time saving by simply being able to add mxfs to the project rather than wait for FCP to re-wrap them? My powerbook takes about half realtime to perform this.

Also a big issue with the wrapping process is the fact that FCP seems to change the gamma quite dramatically on the .mxf. Compare the image in the mxf player to the same clip on the timeline and you will see the difference. This bothers me hugely and I’d much rather be working with an identical image to that captured in the camera. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of this and find out whether FCP is butchering my shots or its a playback and display thing.
