  • Why is my HDV coming in at 720×480?

Posted by Dennis Dean on August 27, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Not even sure where to look in the archives on this one –

I’m capturing HDV 1080i 30p footage but it’s all shows up as 720×480 in the browser, under “Frame Size.” It’s obviously 16:9 format when viewed on FCP’s Monitor. When I drop the clip into a 1080i Sequence Setting – it asks to change the sequence – and turns it into 720×480.

My Easy Setup says HDV (all rates) and HDV 1080p30 FireWire Basic

    Audio / Video settings are
    Sequence Present HDV – 1080p30
    Capture Present HDV
Device HDV Firewire Basic (the Sony Camera)
    and no playback.

I’m connected to my G4 with a Firewire 400 cable. I’ve used both Batch Capture clips and Capture NOW. The CLIP method has been problematic, with FCP wanting to capture some clips but telling me “Unable to Find TimeCode” on others.

Any help is greatly appreciated… I’ve already wasted 2 days with the batch capture problem – only to find this stuff claims to be 720×480 – in a 16:9 ratio. (?)

    Thanks -really appreciate the forum.

A menu item in your camera or deck seems to be set incorrectly and your video is being down-converted to anamorphic DV.

    Camera is Sony’s HVR Z7U

Checked – the Menu says Video Out > COMPONENT > 1080i/480i and within that the 1080i/480i is selected (as opposed to 480i)

There are separate down convert/squeeze settings in the menu area that I have not selected.

In the VCR area everything this is set to HDV.

Not sure what else to do.

Could the Firewire 400 connection possibly have something to do with it?

Component is your Analog output, that has nothing to do with your Firewire output.

You need to find where your DV Output is set and take it off downconvert or 480i as this is where your conversion is happening.

Walter – thank you – HIDDEN in the iLink menu was a toggle to downconvert – even though there were plenty of downconvert options in the VCR menu.

Thanks Walter. NO THANKS Sony. Or does everyone else on the planet but moi know what iLink is about ?

I’m havign the same problem… but the Canon XH A1s doesn’t seem to output video through firewire unless it is set to HD Down-conv. the Canon tech guy on the phone told me to switch it to that to get the firewire output. doesn’t make sense though. I can’t get video out of it unless it’s set that way and if I turn down converting off, FCP doesn’t recognize the camera.. any ideas? thanks
