  • Why is my 3D layer text not spinning around its X and Y properly??

Hmm I’m exploring spinning text around in 3D but I don’t understand an axis not rotating around x and y properly?

I’m creating a simple text turning on the 3D button then altering some of its rotation values. However after a certain point the x and y ‘break’ ie when I rotate either one they don’t rotate around their respective arrow, what gives!? No matter what I do Z always rotates properly though?? Ie when I alter its rotation it spins around (the blue arrow) its axis correctly.

    Why is it doing this!?

    Help really appreciated.

You can do it with the rotation tool if you have Local Axis Mode selected in the Tool palette. If you watch what happens to the rotation (or orientation) values, you’ll see that rotating on the x or y axis generally changes all the x,y, and z values.

When I want to control x, y, and z rotation values independently by entering the values in the Timeline window, I use two nulls. You set up one null as the parent of the other, which is the parent of your text layer.
