  • Why is H.264 640×480 VGA NTSC?

    Hey People,

Just a quick question, I rendered out some clips with FCP using Quicktime compression, with H.264 compression, size 640×480 VGA due to its manageable size to be uploaded for my colleague who is currently oversea to edit with. I know the H.264 is not a proper compression for editing, but this is merely a proxy, there’s time code on the video. Anyway, back to the main subject, when my colleague lay the clips in the timeline, it automatically set the sequence setting to match with the clips. Surprisingly, the aspect ratio is set to NTSC DV 4:3. We are working on PAL format, the source files are PAL format, but why is the rendered H.264 640×480 VGA files became NTSC? Excuse my ignorant, but I think I am missing out on something.

640×480 square pixels = 720×480 non-square pixel NTSC – for it to be true NTSC the frame rate would need to be 29.97fps as well….
