  • why I choose certain brands of hardware for SAN systems

    Hi –
this is a great story, that just happened. I installed a shared storage system for Pennybridge Productions in NY City about 6 months ago. A few days ago, the Maxx Digital drive array failed – well, a drive failed, and we popped in a replacement drive, but the rebuild of the RAID 5 group would not complete. We got a second drive, but again, the rebuild would not complete.

So I called Maxx Digital to complain “what the hell is going on here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. Maxx Digital put a tech on a plane, with a complete replacement 16 bay RAID 5 array, flew to NY overnight, and personally replaced the entire drive array. I could believe this, as I have never seen a company respond like this to an emergency replacement in my entire career. I guess Ryan Sullivan at Pennybridge in NY was pretty damn surprised too.

So when I talk about certain brands, like AJA, or ATTO – support is just as important as performance.

I agree, Bob. Great support is critical.

Here’s why we use “Active Storage” for our X-SAN.

A few years ago when they were new to the market, we were one of the first companies to buy their products. We scheduled a Sunday afternoon to shutdown our SAN and install their new drives. Before we started the process, they had given us their contact info. “Call us if you need help.”, they said. As it turns out, halfway into the installation, we noticed that we were missing a critical part. We called.

It was Sunday afternoon, remember. Alex Grossman, the CEO answered. “Need a part? No problem. I’ll bring it by personally!”. Yes, we were only a half hour drive up the 405, but seeing him show up to hand over the part spoke volumes about why that company has been successful.
