Why does video seem to go in and out of time to music when you’re editing in AE?

are you watching your info window to see if you have real-time playback? that could be it… and what audio format are you using?

even though it should play ram previews back at 100% the speed (You are ram previewing – right?), sometimes you need to reduce the size to 50% of the normal comp size.

If you are not RAM previewing, (if you don’t know what it is, you probably aren;t doing it) then that’s your problem. AE can’t really play things back in real time. A RAM preview cues up the work area in the system RAM. You need to hit 0 on the number pad or the RAM preview button in the time controls area to do this.

I’ve found that you should Rather use wav than mp3.
If it’s not that then; Try Defragging your system.
I use Markers in the timeline when cutting to music. The nice thing about markers is that they show you that you are not going insane. If the Cue is not where it used to be then you know you have aproblem.

I think the big question (and I’m surprised nobody’s asked this) is, “Why are you editing in After Effects at all?”
AE is NOT an editing tool. It’s like using a screwdriver to bang in a nail; you CAN do it but it takes longer, hurts you, and is terribly frustrating.
If you use Premiere to edit you can just open your project in AE as a composition and do whatever colour correction, compositing, or motion graphics you need to.
