  • Why does Sony Vegas make black look grey?

Posted by Sam Caldwell on January 31, 2017 at 3:31 am

Whenever I use a fade at the end or beginning of a video clip or I’m simply using cinematic black bars I notice the what-should-be black actually looks dark grey. Is there any color correction or something else I can do to make the black in my video look richer/fuller? I also think my videos tend to look a little unsaturated, even though I don’t add any sort of color correction etc. please help!!!

    Hi Sam

Is it after render or the preview window in Vegas ?

Have you verified your black levels are actually black with the scopes?

Do you have an understanding of RGB vs sRGB in terms of black levels?

Is your black level on your monitor calibrated?

    Hi Sam !

You have to give more information – What camera does the footage come from – color space 0 – 235, 16 – 235 or ?
    Render codec in Vegas ?
How does the Waveform i Vegas look like – maybe try with and S-curve in Sony Color Curves !

It’s not camera footage it’s recorded desktop so I don’t know about color space. I don’t know what the render codec is and I don’t know what wave form is.
