  Why does illustrator cs5 template layer pick up colors from dimmed image

  Hello!

  I am having trouble with creating a template layer from which to trace over a JPG. I have created the template layer with the image, locked it and set the dim to 50%. However, when I use the eyedropper over the image to color the layer on top with gradient mesh, it picks up the dimmed color. Setting the template layer to 100% fixes the issue, but other computers in the lab work to do this technique with the 50% dimmed template.

  Any advice?
