Why does FCP X show two tracks of audio when I recorded one?
Often, when I have a clip with just one track of audio, FCP X detects two tracks, the second of which has almost or completely no activity on it. Why does it do that? It means for all these clips I need to manually disable the empty one.

Almost no activity isn’t the same as being an empty track. I guess FCPX is just erring on the side of caution. I’m assuming here that you’ve asked it to remove empty tracks on import, which is something I rarely use. I find I’m better at picking empty tracks than FCPX.
Ultimately, it’s no big deal to select the clip(s) in the browser and toggle the offending track off.

If you recorded a stereo track with a mono microphone so that only the left channel has a signal, FCP X is probably still seeing it as the primary stereo pair. I agree with Jeff that any activity at all would make it not empty. I haven’t tested trying to get FCP X to remove a silent channel from a stereo pair because I always record on both tracks with one having the volume lower as a safety in case the main track over modulates. Like Jeff said, just turn it off in the clip properties.
