  • Why does chromakeyer effect not get turned off when I deselected the chromakeyer in video fx?

Posted by Jeff David on July 5, 2018 at 5:16 pm

This is pretty difficult to explain via the written word so I hope this makes sense.

I have shot video of me doing voice over so that I would appear in the finished clip as an on-screen announcer. That clip is above another different clip of the background scenery I want in the completed chromakey combined shot. The completed chromakey effect looked fine.

However, I then slid the shot of me – doing the onscreen voiceover down the timeline slightly so that it is no longer above just the original background scenery shot, but part of it was ALSO now over a different background scenery shot.

The chromakey effect was slightly off over the new background scenery. I, therefore, wanted to tweak the chromakey effect over the part of my voiceover video that is now above the new background scenery. Therefore in the video event fx I switched off the chroma keyer and cookie cutter selections as my plan was to first split my voice over video in two at the point where the NEW background scenery starts.. My experience has been that if you try to use the same chromakey over two different background sceneries (i.e. the video track of the background scenery that is below the video track of me speaking on camera) you can end up w poor chromakey shots. So I always chromakey to each specific background scenery shot.

The odd thing is – when I turned off the chromakeyer effect, instead of the preview window showing simply the video of me speaking on screen, w the green background of my green screen, (as I think it should have) the entire chromakey effect was in still in effect. I.e. I was still appearing along w the background scenery.

Of course, before anything kets chromakeyed, the green screen video footage blocks out video tracks that are below it. That is not happening even though I turned off the chromakeyer fx.

Hmmm – while I was typing this, even though I normally chromakey to each specific underlying scenery shot/track – I am wondering if maybe the voiceover shot of me as the on-screen announcer – maybe it was split off from a longer clip and maybe that is what the problem is?

[Jeff David] “This is pretty difficult to explain via the written word ….”

Sure is. I need, at the very least, a couple of ScreenGrabs.

That’s interesting Jeff. Of course we can get it to work the opposite using the FX Bypass, but not the way you are describing. Maybe some screen shots would help.

Jeff, is it possible you have two Chroma Keyer FX applied by error in perhaps a chain of other FX’s and have missed it?

Wow – I just went to take some screen shots and the problem no longer exists. I think it might have do w my computer. The internal hard drive is 75% full and I know that is not good. My computer seems to have some lag involved. Delayed reactions possibly is what caused the issue. For some reason, there seems to be some type of delay on certain changes I make. I’m all set now. Thanks!

Jeff, have you done a Vegas reset recently and deleted the application cached data? That might help speed it up.

Thanks for the reminder. I did one about 3 months ago but I probably need to do it again.

I’m going to get files out of my internal hard drive tomorrow and save them to an external drive so I can get the percent of space used down low. That should help too.

    Thanks

Wow – I spoke too soon. The problem has not been fixed. The lower video track still shows up as the background even though I deleted the chromokeyer fx effect.

I attached 2 screen shots. In the top picture, you can see I have deleted the chromokeyer fx effect. I had chromokeyed it to green screen in the video of me speaking as the announcer voiceover.

But I turned it off – as explained above, I moved the voiceover announcer clip vid and now there is a different background scenery clip on the lower video track.

The second screen shot shows that the background lower vid track still appears even though the chromokeyer effect has been deleted. As you know – w the chromokeyer effect deleted, we should be seeing simply my top video of me with my green screen in the background and not having the lower vid track also appear.

This is not a hugh problem as the green screen effect in the live video is still pretty good but could prob be a hair better on the new background scene part if I could tweak it.

This has been really hard to explain via written word. Hope this clarifies it.

Jeff, now I can understand your “issue”. Firstly, I can just make out, and it is isn’t clear, that there is still an active FX. The FX Icon on the Event looks coloured LIVE. So, secondly, can we have a clear ScreenGrab of that Event? If all of this is correct then that will be your problem.

    Cheers,

Jeff, I’ve relooked over your SGs, please present clearer views. How are you going about executing SGs? In the meantime try using the FX Bypass. This will knockout ANY FXing, if this removed the CK FX then it’s indicating you still having a CK active. In which case please confirm by a decent, zoomed-in ScreenGrab of that Event.

    Interesting….

Thank you for your responses. I’m tied up now but I’ll get you some better screen grabs in a little bit.

I shrunk the ones I already posted down – as I was afraid they would exceed the size limits. I can make them bigger and maybe do two separate uploads.

I just tried doing ctrl + to make increase the size of the image (of the attached screen grabs) but that does not seem to work in this format for some reason.

The top sg was meant to show that there is no fx activated – but given what you said – I will double check that and post a better screen grab. You might have hit the nail on the head. Also- thanks for the info on the bypass. I did not know about that so thanks for teaching me something new. I’ll definitely check that out and be back once I am less tied up.

    Thanks!
