  • Why do I need to re-render using Edit to Tape?

Posted by Neil Sinclair on July 10, 2006 at 4:51 pm

I’ve created approx 50 spots. All are in 8 bit uncompressed,
rendered (and I’ve used Mixdown) and waiting to go to tape.

My problem is that when I use the Edit to tape function FCP
wants to render them again!! As some of these spots are taking
    5 mins to re-render it’s becoming a pain. I can’t work it out.
This is happening to approx 20% of my sequences whilst the other
edit to tape with absolutely no problem. I’ve been through all the settings and each sequence has identical settings. Any ideas what may be causing FCP to want to re-render these sequences

    Thanks for any help

    Hmmm,

I’ve seen FCP do that on Print to tape, but never on Edit to tape. What version of FCP are you running? Have you tried trashing prefs?

    Have a wonderful day.

Just a shot in the dark here. I notice that you are using a decklink card. I’m wondering if your preferences are set to output a different codec than what you edited your sequences in when using edit to tape. Check your preferences under Audio/Video settings>A/V Devices>Different output for edit to Tape/Print to video.
Make sure that this is unchecked or at least showing the same codec that your main sequences are set to. For that matter make sure that your Playback Output is set up correctly as well.
What are you recording to and how are you feeding it?

I’ve had this exact problem. I don’t know what causes it, but I have a work around. I export my entire sequence as a Quick time movie, bring it into a new sequence, then use edit to tape. It’s definitely a pain, but it prevents dropped frames and you don’t have to render again.

Were they rendered or just realtime playback the difference is a faint light green bar (above the time line,in a sequence) if it is realtime and a blue bar if it is rendered. I am not refering to the thick green bar indicating preview render this is fainter than that. And unless all the options under sequence/render all (proxy/needs render/dynamic/etc.) are set it will not render until an edit to tape. Also edit tape has to render Bars and tone, countdowns, and black if those options are selected in the mastering settings menu. hope this helps

I think Trinity’s correct. You had some effects that needed to be rendered as “FULL”. If you render at Full as you go, I don’t think you’ll have to render again. Make sure it is checked in the Sequence > Render menus. This gets by a lot of folks, I am sure.

Thanks for the ideas guys but….

Telly, Sequence has definitely been rendered at Full
    Running on FCP 5.0.4
    Prefs have been trashed.
Edit to tape in editing mode, no B&T etc
Going via Decklink SDI to Sony DVW A500P
All Video/audio/output/edit to tape settings are correctly set.
Been through them enough time to make my brain hurt!

What get’s me is that the problem exists on some sequences
and not others even though they were all created in exactly the same way.

Check to see if you have any “Diabled Clips” in the timeline. I’ve noticed that even though the effects may be rendered, if there are disabled clips the ETT function like to re-render the material where the disabled clips are located.

    Hey Red

No one has mentioned the Safe / Unlimited selector

look under your safe rt / unlimited rt and check those settings

There is a setting there which affects quality between playing and laying off to tape.

I believe that if your set to unlimited, and you do have all your render choices checked, FCP still does not do a full render until you ETT.

Just before you are ready to ETT change it to safe, high quality, etc, and do one more Render All

also. I throw away all my previous renders through the render manager and start from scratch.
I know it takes longer but it guarantees you are playing the correct render of something

Hope this makes sense and Hope this helps

[redexit] “Telly, Sequence has definitely been rendered at Full”

Yes, but do you have the Sequence Render Settings set to render everything under “Render All” and “Render Selection?” That’s what he was asking. Under your Render Settings, FCP defaults to NOT render items which are considered Full Quality during realtime playback. But they MUST be rendered before you Edit to Tape.

Be sure all of the render options under both Render All and Render Selection are selected to ensure that you really are rendering everything before you Edit to Tape.

    Thanks again…

All clips are enabled. All settings in RT are correctly set.

Deleted render files in Render Manager and re-rendered. Still renders on ETT

Walter, Render setting are all ticked in both selection and render all

I can usually work through most problems on FCP but this has got me stumped big time.
