why do flat screen TVs treat 720 & 1280 as 480i?
I’ve created an After Effects 5 min clip at 720i or 1280i, burned to DVD using either iDVD or Toast, and the DVD plays great on the iMac or my old Sony Trinitron TV. But on modern, flat screen TVs the sides get cropped. Viewing “info” I noticed that those TVs see the clip as 480i; so the 1280 width gets cropped to 720 wide.
What’s going on? I’ve burned 1280 in the distant past and never used to get this problem. Are these flat screens looking for Blu-Ray disks?

All DVDs are 480. You are down ressing when you go to DVD

I don’t understand, 5-8 years ago I created wide screen DVDs this way and they played correctly on large flat screen TVs. Do more up-to-date TVs no longer have the option of choosing wide screen? (Yes, they do have options: full, zoom, 4:3, yet none get it right.)
Why does that old Trinitron display the entire image and yet the newer TVs not? Why does the iMac show the full image? Sorry if I seem dense.

Thinking this through: it sounds like I must take my 1280×720 clip and place it inside a 720×480 frame, and burn that to DVD.
Is this what was happening 8 yrs. ago when I used DVD Studio Pro to create large screen movies? No way to check, those files are long gone now.

I’d be willing to bet your DVD player is not set correctly. Make sure it is set up for widescreen
Also did you encode 4×3 by mistake?

Thanks for continuing to respond Eric. This is a neighbor’s player and screen. Been through all the viewing options on both, AFAIK no way to set player to WS. However the screen, a Panasonic, says the disk is 480i Standard, that means non-WS to me so maybe there’s a setup deep within that player.
My big problem is which goes back east to play as a loop for 6 weeks in a museum. No telling what the staff and equip. there is capable of.

DVD supports 480i 16×9 anamorphic so that reading is correct. It works on your mac and the other TV so it has to be the set up on your friends player and/or TV
