  • Why do BG processes quit during render?

    Hello all,

When using MP during a render, the BG processes (aeselflink in the Activity Monitor) will quit. Leaving only the main app to render (effectively back to single core rendering). Other times it will leave anywhere from one to three cores running. Stranger still is that other times I’m able to MP render all the way through no problem. It seems to be how heavy the comp is; the heavier it is, the more likely the processes are to quit on me.

Note that this is only during movie output from the render queue; when it’s doing a RAM preview it can sustain an 8-core preview just fine. It’s only when I go to output a movie do the BG process start dying.

I’ve even downloaded the Throttle script and set the available MP cores to six, four, and three and ran renders each time. Thinking it’s an available ram issue. But every time the processes quit.

Is there a way to remedy this?

In my preferences I have the default 120% / 60% in the memory preferences. OpenGL is off. Disk Cache is off.

    System specs:

    Mac Pro 8-core
    8GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM
    OSX 10.5.4
    Latest update of AE CS3

Open up the Info palette before rendering. Sometimes it will display a message about not having enough ram for all the cores and that it’s disabling multiprocessing.
