Why DNx45 not showing as export option in QT
Posted by Phil Coulloudon on June 25, 2011 at 4:38 amMC 5.5.1
Looking to encode animations from AE to dnx45-1080p/29.97 for fast import into project with same settings. Do not see this as option in QT export settings. Why?Also if exporting from MC same-as-source from dnx45 project, is it really dnx45? I’m not on workstation right now so can’t do re-import to verify.
Have installed codec pkg 2.3.4. Snow leopard Mac.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

June 25, 2011 at 5:07 pmIS DNxHD36 showing up? DNx45 is simply the same compression ratio as DNx36, just with a higher frame rate.
Avid classifies the DNxHD codecs into “families”; DNx45 is part of the DNx36 family.

June 25, 2011 at 6:39 pmThanks Micael,
Yes the DNxHD36 shows up and so does the DNxHD75 from 720p/29.97. The only one missing is DNxHD45 1080p/29.97.
The MC project is 1080p/29.97 and working at DNxHD45 so I am hoping for fast import by AE encoding to DNxHD45. The QTs are fairly long with a quick turnaround required into MC.5.5.1
We are considering AMA but then there are issues with reliable native playback and transcode time.
Odd that it is not in the codec LE pkg for QT.

June 25, 2011 at 6:49 pmMy Mac doesn’t have it either – not in any QT Encoder settings.
I also have MC 5.5.x on my computer.
Avid’s DNxHD whitepaper does list it:
https://www.avid.com/static/resources/US/documents/DNxHD.pdf
I seem to recall hearing something about the spec being there, but some “flavors” Avid did not release in the codec packs – for whatever reason.

June 25, 2011 at 7:07 pmOK – thanks, that is unfortunate. We have been looking at DNxHD45 for the drive space savings plus the quality is totally acceptable for many situations.
I have earlier studied the White Paper you provided. We just recently upgraded to MC5.5.x so exploring new and faster ways of dealing with media prompted the closer look at 1080p/29.97 DNxHD45.
I guess we will do more testing with the AMA.
Thanks,

June 25, 2011 at 8:49 pmIt will be called DNxHD36, which, at 29.97fps will measure 45.

June 27, 2011 at 5:03 pmI’m sorry but I don’t think I follow.
If I am using QTpro for example…I choose to export 1080p/23.976-DNxHD36 with frame rate specified as 29.97. MC will see this as DNxHD45? And I will get fast import into a project set at 1080p/29.97 with DNxHD45 as chosen setting?
Or DNxHD45 is left out of codec packages on purpose…maybe to be added at later date?

I just tested this scenario above and MC does see the media as DNxHD45 and I do get fast import in 1080p/29.97 project.
Thanks,
