  • Why can’t Project Settings be changed?

Posted by Bon Sawyer on January 3, 2006 at 2:57 am

    Hi all,

I’ve just started using Premiere Pro, after having used Premiere 5/6 and Final Cut Pro 4.5 extensively.

I’m finding that I can’t change the Project Settings of a project after setting them initially. This was easily done in previous versions, as well as in FCP.

This is the workflow I used to use in FCP… I’ll be disappointed if I can’t do something similar in Premiere Pro:
    (1) Capture clips in DV format.
    (2) Edit clips on DV timeline, add titles, colour-correct, etc.
    (3) When finished editing, change project settings from DV codec to “Uncompressed” codec.
    (4) Re-render timeline as uncompressed, export as uncompressed.

This resulted in significantly better quality final output, especially for encoding to MPEG-2, while allowing me to enjoy the small file sizes and faster editing of a DV timeline. I could easily switch back to the DV timeline if necessary for later changes.

Searching the archives, I found this thread proposing a solution:

It seems kinda cumbersome compared to the simplicity of the FCP approach described above. Is there another alternative?

    Thanks,

    -Bon

Is the footage DV to begin with…?

You can create another PPro project with the settings you want, then import the DV project into the new project and re-capture footage.

I would recommend creating a trimmed project from the finished DV project AND IMPORT THAT ONE into the new project to cut down the size of the media load you need to re-capture.

I suspect the ability to change project/capture/render settings were a tech support black hole on previous versions of Premiere, Adobe eliminated the capability to streamline the process.

    I am a bit confused. Steps 1, 2 & 3 are all possible.

But why would you do step 4. You already have an uncompressed clip. Why put it on a timeline and rerender and then export the same thing again?

By the way, when you export to MPEG2 from Premiere Pro, it does not use the rendered files. It starts from scratch using the original material. So there is no degradation of going to DV first. Of course, this only matters to titles and stills and the like. The DV clips will never get any better than DV. Even uncompressing them does not increase the quality. Something about a silk purse from a cow’s ear?

Tim- I am referring to DV clips, yes. It seems like creating a new project, as you have described, is the only way to do it. A shame, as FCP’s ability to easily switch back and forth within one project was/is very convenient.

Steve- how is Step 3 possible? The option to change Project Settings from one format to another seems to be always greyed out.

    Thanks for the responses.
